We are small-scale but that means we can be adaptable and work with you if you want something unique, New Zealand grown and naturally beautiful.

As illustrated, our recommended use for Eucalyptus Nitens finished as tongue-and-groove boards are interior walls, ceilings and floors. Parquet floors can also be made from this timber in almost any design. It also suits applications such as architraves and skirtings, shelving and joinery. We have seen examples of occasional furniture and kitchen joinery made from Eucalyptus Nitens.

The natural colour is very light blonde similar to tawa. Our website photos have been colour-corrected to give a very close indication of the colour and grain (feature), but the colour rendering of your screen may vary. We are happy to send you a small sample so please get in touch.

The growing, drying and finishing processes we use minimise the stresses in the timber that might cause dimensional change. However large variations in humidity and temperature can affect the timber once installed. Timber is alive and responds to its environment, so if it is exposed to seasonal changes such as humid summers and dry winters, there may be some dimensional changes.

Eucalyptus Nitens matches the hardness and stability of rimu and American white oak (*See Reference). And it is genuinely sustainably grown in New Zealand. For additional data on hardness see here.

We store the timber as semi-finished boards, and these need to be dried to a low moisture content then finished including cutting the profile you want. We prefer to do this in batches that meet the quantity you need. Call us to talk about the quantity you need, the mix of board lengths, the level of grain or feature and all the other details that suit what you want to do. Drying and finishing could take 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the time of year – so include us at an early stage of your planning.

We can try! Small batches of special dimensions and mouldings are possible, and Eucalyptus Nitens can be coloured to match rimu, matai and even aged kauri. Talk to us about what you need and we will do our best to help.

A wide variety of finishes can be used including coloured stains, oils and matt or gloss varnishes. We have personally experimented with low allergenic, environmentally friendly products made by Bona of Sweden. But we can’t give a recommendation or warranty that any one product is better for your location and application because factors like sunlight, temperature and humidity, and how hard-wearing you need the finish to be will make all the difference. Get local advice!

You are right – nothing is perfect for all applications! Eucalyptus Nitens is not ground durable. That means it should not be used where it touches the ground. Nor should it be repeatedly exposed to water or dampness, unless a water-resistant finish is used. We don’t recommend it for decks or external use unless very well protected.

Do not leave any tool or item made of iron, steel or any other metal in contact with Eucalyptus Nitens that has not had a waterproof finish applied, as it will stain.
